Susan is a passionate writer, artist, and adventurer.  She is a proud descendant of John and Priscilla Alden and Myles Standish of Mayflower fame and a fierce Scrabble competitor.  She grew up on the East Coast of the United States.  While in high school, she flew to Italy and within hours of landing saw Pope John Paul II and singer John Denver.  That was it: she was hooked on travel and celebrity!

After completing her bachelor’s degree in mass communications and master’s coursework in counseling psychology, she settled in Southern California with her little tribe (a sweet daughter, shaggy Shi Tzu, and curmudgeonly Calico).

Her professional career has run the gamut from TV and travel/leisure to law enforcement and philanthropy! By far, her most memorable and rewarding stint involved working in a juvenile jail, interacting with incarcerated, high-risk youth on poetry contests, Thriller dances, and holiday caroling.

In recent years, she has taken up charcoal and graphite portraiture, quicky becoming an award-winning artist.

Susan’s travels have taken her from the U.S. to Europe, Canada to Mexico, South America to Asia.  She has trekked through crypts, sauntered through palaces, and hoofed through hilltop ruins.  In every town in every city on every continent there has been a trove of scintillating stories and hidden history.

She hopes that Bertie: The Best Stuttering King will highlight one such story and one such person: sweet, stuttering Bertie, better known as King George VI of England.

Summary

Bertie: The Best Stuttering King is a children’s story about a timid, stuttering prince who is thrust unexpectedly on the throne and becomes one of the best kings of the 20th Century.  A history book in rhyme for children and children who stutter, this story highlights England’s most reluctant monarch, King George VI, and his early struggles with stuttering, knock knees, and bullying – topics still relevant today.
